Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is the best-known natural remedy for protecting the urinary tract. Its proanthocyanidins (PACs) make it harder for bacteria to attach to the bladder wall.
How cranberry works
Type-A PACs stop E. coli from adhering to the urinary lining, so they are flushed out more easily – natural protection against recurring urinary tract infections.
What to look for
- Check the PAC content (around 36 mg daily is considered effective)
- Concentrated extracts (e.g. 25:1) rather than sugary juices
- Take regularly, especially if prone to infections
Caution & when to see a doctor
Cranberry is for prevention – an acute infection with fever, flank pain or blood in the urine needs medical care (antibiotics). With blood thinners (e.g. warfarin), check first. Cranberry contains oxalate; with known oxalate stones, watch the amount.
